«The Trump administration raised the stakes in a trade dispute with China by proposing a 10% tariff on $200 billion of Chinese goods on 10 July 2018. These tariffs were in addition to $50 billion already officially imposed on China. The Ministry of Commerce of China immediately responded, warning of similar retaliation. But while tariffs can reduce competition from foreign firms at home, they can also raise the costs of imported inputs for domestic firms, leading domestic consumers and firms that depend heavily on foreign produced goods to suffer.
So, what are the costs of the trade war between the US and China? Are there any spillover effects to Europe, Japan, Korea and the rest of the world? This lunch briefing will examine the economic costs and the financial market responses to the Trump administration’s initial and subsequent tariffs on imports from China.»

Projection du film de Stanley KWAN, sur la vie de l'actrice RUAN Lingyu 阮玲玉 (1910-1935), souvent surnommée la «Greta Garbo chinoise».
"RUAN Lingyu ist in den 30er Jahren eine der erfolgreichsten Schauspielerinnen Chinas. Bereits in jungen Jahren begann ihre Karriere und sie erlebte einen kometenhaften Aufstieg. In ihren Rollen widerspiegeln sich oft ihre eigenen Probleme und Konfikte, wodurch ihre Darstellungen eine sehr persönliche Note erhalten. Doch bereits im Alter von 25 Jahren wird Ruan von der Skandalpresse in den Selbstmord getrieben.
Center Stage wechselt immer wieder zwischen nachgestellten Episoden ihres Lebens und einer Gegenwartsebene, in der die Crew des Films über Ruan und ihr Leben spricht. Dabei werden viele Szenen aus ihren Filmen nachgespielt und auch Szenen aus noch erhaltenen Filmen gezeigt. Durch diese Vermischung der Ebenen gelingt Kwan ein Film, welcher sich klar von herkömmlichen Biopics absetzt und aufzeigt, dass man die Komplexität einer solchen Persönlichkeit nicht einfach innerhalb eines Dramas festhalten kann. Die Szenen, in welchen die Filme Ruans nachgestellt werden, vermitteln ein Gefühl für ihre Kunst, wie wir es selten in Filmen über Künstler*innen sehen. Die Szenen in der Gegenwart lockern den Film auf charmante Weise auf und zeigen in einem beinahe dokumentarischen Stil die Entstehung einer Biografe."
