China Battles Surge in Respiratory Infections Among Children (Caixin)
2023-11-23
Beijing and other parts of China are battling a surge in respiratory infections, with sick children filling some hospitals to capacity and a lack of nucleic acid kits hampering accurate diagnosis and treatment, Caixin has learned. Hospitals in parts of China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan and Guangzhou, have recorded a surge in mycoplasma pneumoniae infections over the past few months, according to media reports and doctors Caixin spoke to. In the capital in particular, some children’s hospitals and pediatric departments are close to capacity — if not already full — due to the surge, Caixin has learned. Mycoplasma pneumoniae is an “atypical” bacterium that is commonly found in children and can lead to life-threatening conditions such as severe pneumonia and encephalitis, according to Hong Kong’s Center for Health Protection. At a Nov. 13 press conference held by the National Health Commission, Tong Zhaohui, vice president of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, acknowledged that there is “an epidemic trend of mycoplasma pneumoniae (infections) in children this year” compared with the past three years, in which such infections monitored “were at a lower level globally.” But he also said such epidemics are cyclical, occurring every three to seven years. Authorities have not revealed the number of cases. Sun Yuan, president of Beijing Jingdu Children’s Hospital, told Caixin that 90% of the hospital’s 300 beds were occupied, and long lines had formed outside the already overburdened hospital. “Doctors have been working overtime, and all medical resources have been used to meet patient demand, but it still may not be enough,” Sun said, noting the hospital’s average daily outpatient volume recently reached 2,000 on weekdays and exceeded 3,000 on weekends. By comparison, during the Covid-19 pandemic, that average was only 1,000 visits per day. Similarly, all beds at Beijing Children’s Hospital were in use as of Oct. 31, the father of an ill 2-year-old girl told Caixin. “This year has been the worst year ever, at least as far as I know for mycoplasma infections,” Sun said. The surge in mycoplasma pneumoniae infections could be attributed to three years of Covid controls that have led to weakened immunity, especially among children, Li Tong, chief physician of Beijing Youan Hospital’s respiratory and infectious disease department, told the state-run China News Service. As cases continue to rise, some stressed-out doctors were found to be mistreating or over-treating patients, increasing their risk of serious illness and death. […] The World Health Organization has requested detailed information due to the increase in respiratory illnesses in China and reported clusters of pneumonia in children.
